San Miguel Febres Cordero

Francisco Febres Cordero, el conocido Santo Hermano Miguel de los Lasallistas, nace en Cuenca, Ecuador, el 7 de noviembre de 1854.

En su juventud no gozó de buena salud, por el contrario, nació con una grave deformación de sus pies que le impidió caminar a la edad normal, por lo que no pudo gozar de los juegos y entretenimientos de los niños de su edad. Tampoco pudo asistir normalmente a la escuela, por lo que sus primeras enseñanzas las recibió de labios de sus padres, en su propia casa.

De niño jugó en los patios de la casa de sus abuelos maternos  -convertida hoy en el Palacio Arzobispal de la ciudad de Cuenca-, con sus primos Alberto Muñoz Vernaza y Antonio Vega Muñoz, pero en 1863, cuando gracias a las gestiones realizadas por el presidente García Moreno, se fundó en Cuenca la Misión Lasallana de los Hermanos Cristianos, pidió, a pesar de su corta edad, ingresar a dicha comunidad, y obedeciendo al llamado de su vocación religiosa tomó su decisión más importante: «Sólo seré feliz en mi vida si me dejan ser Hermano Cristiano».

Su familia es una que siempre tuvo relieve en esta nación suramericana.

Tal vez justamente por eso, porque los suyos esperaban brillo en el mundo del futuro Santo, le hicieron oposición a su entrada a los Hermanos de las Escuelas Cristianas, los fundados por San Juan Bautista de la Salle. Pero él terminó venciendo esa oposición, y fue el primer ecuatoriano que entró al Instituto.

Era un estudiante aplicado, que se convirtió en un gran maestro.

Aún siendo muy joven, no tenía todavía los 20 años, publica su primera de sus muchas obras, una gramática que alcanza rápidamente el nivel de popular.

Sus estudios e investigaciones en los campos de la lingüística y la literatura, lo ponen en contacto con eruditos del mundo entero.

Es nombrado miembro de Academias de Ecuador y de España.

Pero el norte de su vida lo da la fidelidad al carisma lasalliano y por ello la enseñanza en él es algo prioritario, particularmente las clases de religión.

También se destaca en la preparación de los jóvenes a la primera comunión.

Los alumnos elogian en el Hermano Miguel sus varias cualidades, su sencillez, su franqueza, la emoción que pone en la difusión de la devoción al Corazón de Cristo y a la Madre de Dios.

Viaje a Europa

En 1907 parte a Bélgica, pues debía trabajar en la traducción al español de textos usados por los hermanos franceses que recientemente habían tenido que huir de su patria. Su salud, siempre delicada, tiene dificultades para adaptarse a los rigores del clima europeo.

No hay vida sin cruz, y menos la de los santos, y en el caso del Santo Hermano Miguel, una de esas cruces era su frágil salud.

Se le transfiere al noviciado menor de Premià de Mar, en España, y ahí se ocupa de evacuar por mar, hacia Barcelona, a los jóvenes que están bajo su responsabilidad, durante los desórdenes revolucionarios de 1909.

Poco después podrán volver a Premià de Mar.

Después de esto, contrae una neumonía y fallece el 9 de febrero de 1910 en Premià de Mar, dejando tras él fama de sabio, de maestro y de santo.

Es canonizado por San Juan Pablo II el 21 de octubre de 1984.
