Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada nació el 28 de marzo de 1515, en Gotarrendura, provincia de Ávila, en el seno de una familia numerosa de la pequeña nobleza castellana.
Desde muy niña se interesaba por episodios de la vida de los santos, y cuando supo de los hechos de los primeros mártires, pensó que ese camino era una línea derecha al Cielo. Entonces decidió huir con su hermanito Rodrigo a “tierra de moros”, para entregar allí sus vidas en defensa de la fe. Estaban ya bastante lejos de la ciudad cuando un tío suyo consiguió alcanzarlos y devolverlos a casa.
Al haber perdido a su madre con tan sólo 14 años, Teresa se entregó en las manos de la Virgen, tomándola como única Madre.

A los 20 años ingresó en el monasterio carmelita de la Encarnación, en Ávila —al principio contra la voluntad de su padre—, donde un año después hizo sus votos. Allí vivían casi doscientas religiosas bajo la regla mitigada de la Orden del Carmen. Sor Teresa recibió una espaciosa celda, junto con la libertad de recibir visitas a cualquier hora e ir a la ciudad por el motivo que fuere. Era habitual que las monjas estuvieran horas charlando en el locutorio, convertido en una especie de centro de reuniones sociales.

Sin embargo, la cruz, elemento esencial de la grandeza, no tardó en presentarse a esa alma escogida. Poco después de su profesión religiosa, su salud se debilitó tanto que su padre, Alonso de Cepeda, consiguió permiso para llevarla al pueblo de Becedas, donde vivía una mujer cuyos tratamientos médicos tenían fama de eficaces.
Durante el viaje, Teresa conoció la oración mental a través del libro Tercer alfabeto espiritual, del P. Francisco de Osuna, sintiéndose invitada a la vida de contemplación.
De regreso a la casa paterna, una contracción muscular fortísima la dejó sin sentido durante casi cuatro días. La habrían enterrado si su padre no se hubiese opuesto. Incluso en esas condiciones, Teresa deseaba volver pronto al convento. Su alma, como la de Job (cf. 2, 10), se encontraba en excelentes disposiciones: “Estaba muy conforme con la voluntad de Dios, aunque me dejase así siempre. Paréceme que toda mi ansia era de sanar para estar a solas en oración como estaba acostumbrada”.
Después de tres años de parálisis, sus oraciones a San José le obtuvieron la curación y a partir de ese momento la devoción al santo Patriarca se volvió primordial en su vida.
La Vida Mística de Santa Teresa
“Ya no quiero que tengas conversación con hombres, sino con ángeles”, fueron las palabras que oyó Teresa en el primer éxtasis que le concedió la gracia divina. “Desde aquel día yo quedé tan animosa para dejarlo todo por Dios como quien había querido en aquel momento —que no me parece fue más— dejar otra a su sierva”.
Al par de las pruebas, ahora Cristo continuaba hablándole con frecuencia y parecía andar siempre a su lado: “Ninguna vez que me recogiese un poco, o no estuviese muy distraída, podía ignorar que estaba cabe mí”. No era raro, en esas intimidades con Jesús, sentir en su alma el fuego del amor divino.
En más de una ocasión llegó a tener su corazón transverberado por un ángel, dejándole las marcas físicas de una perforación: “Quiso el Señor que viese aquí algunas veces esta visión: veía un ángel cabe mí […]. Veíale en las manos un dardo de oro largo, y al fin del hierro me parecía tener un poco de fuego. Éste me parecía meter por el corazón algunas veces y que me llegaba a las entrañas. Al sacarlo, me parecía las llevaba consigo, y me dejaba toda abrasada en amor grande de Dios. Era tan grande el dolor, que me hacía dar aquellos quejidos, y tan excesiva la suavidad que me pone este grandísimo dolor, que no hay desear que se quite, ni se contenta el alma con menos que Dios”.
Reforma Carmelita
Sobre todo, veía la necesidad de reformar el Carmelo y sentía la llamada de la Providencia para realizar esta misión. Deseaba comunidades que no fueran mero refugio de almas contemplativas, preocupadas en fruir y gozar de la convivencia divina, sino verdaderas antorchas de amor ocupadas en reparar el mal que era hecho a la Iglesia. “Estáse ardiendo el mundo, quieren tornar a sentenciar a Cristo, como dicen, pues le levantan mil testimonios, quieren poner su Iglesia por el suelo. […] No, hermanas mías, no es tiempo de tratar con Dios negocios de poca importancia”.

Finalmente, con las debidas autorizaciones, el 24 de agosto de 1562 se celebró la primera Misa en el Monasterio de San José, el primogénito de los Carmelos reformados. En la más estricta pobreza y clausura, Teresa se puso a instruir a sus monjas, mostrándoles la fuerza de la vida comunitaria bien llevada, en la obediencia y en la alegría. Siempre les recordaba el principal motivo por el cual habían consagrado sus vidas: “Y si en esto podemos algo con Dios, estando encerradas peleamos por Él, y daré yo por muy bien empleados los trabajos que he pasado por hacer este rincón, adonde también pretendí se guardase esta Regla de nuestra Señora y Emperadora con la perfección que se comenzó”.
Transcurridos 450 años de la fundación del primero de esos monasterios, el Papa Benedicto XVI creyó conveniente recordar la coyuntura en la cual vivió la santa mística y cómo aquella situación nos parece familiar. Para el Santo Padre, la reflexión de la santa carmelita permanece muy actual, luminosa e interpelante. “También hoy, como en el siglo XVI, y entre rápidas transformaciones, es preciso que la plegaria confiada sea el alma del apostolado, para que resuene con meridiana claridad y pujante dinamismo el mensaje redentor de Jesucristo.

Ese radical modo de vivir atrajo enseguida a muchas jóvenes vocaciones.
