Corría el año de 1223. La nieve cubría con su albo manto la pequeña ciudad de Greccio, en el centro- sur de Italia. Las campanas repicaban festivamente, anunciando la noche de Navidad.
Todos los habitantes, campesinos en su mayoría, se encontraban reunidos alrededor de San Francisco de Asís, quien intentaba explicarles el misterio del nacimiento del Niño Dios. Ellos escuchaban con respeto, pero…no daban muestras de haber comprendido realmente.
¿Que hacer?
San Francisco buscó algún modo más didáctico de explicar a los iletrados aldeanos la historia de Navidad. Mando traer una imagen del Niño Jesús, una cunita, pajas, un buey y un burro.
Los asistentes se miran entre sí, sorprendidos, pero salen a buscar todo rápidamente.
En poco tiempo, el santo compuso la escena: en el centro, la cuna con las pajas; al fondo, los dos pacíficos animales. Faltaban apenas la imagen del Niño Dios. Con gran devoción, San Francisco la tomo en los brazos, para depositarla en la cuna.
¡Se da entonces el gran prodigio!
Ante los ojos maravillados de todos, la imagen toma vida y el niño sonríe para San Francisco.
Este abraza tiernamente al Divino Infante y lo acuesta sobre las pajas de la cuna, mientras todos se arrodillan en una actitud de adoración.
El Niño Dios sonríe una vez más y bendice a aquellos campesinos allí postrados a sus pies.
Poco instantes después, había sobre las pajas una simple imagen inanimada… pero en el alma de todos permaneció el recuerdo vivo del Niño Jesús. ¡Él les había sonreído!
A partir de entonces, el pueblo de Greccio armaba todos lo años el “pesebre de San Francisco”, con la cándida esperanza de que el milagro se renovase. No fueron engañadas sus esperanzas.
Aunque la imagen no volvió a tomar vida, la Virgen María le hablaba especialmente al alma en esas ocasiones, con gracias sensibles.
¿Qué gracias? Las gracias propias a la Liturgia de Navidad.
¿Sólo para los aldeanos de Greccio? ¡No!, en todos los pesebres del mundo está presente el Niño Jesús —Con María su Madre, y San José— a la espera apenas de que nos acerquemos para, también nosotros, recibir una sonrisa y una bendición.
Es justamente por ese motivo que se esparció por todo el universo católico la costumbre de armar pesebres por ocasión de Navidad.
Haga, lector, como los habitantes de Greccio. Arrodíllese piadosamente delante del Niño Jesús en el pesebre y, por intersección de la Santísima Virgen María, pida para Ud. y para todos sus seres queridos esta sonrisa que comunica felicidad, esa bendición que trasmite paz.
