Y con toda razón, pues el pecado nos aleja de Dios, tornando necesaria nuestra reconciliación con Él. Solo la Adorable Sangre de Dios tendría mérito infinito para redimir el pecado original y las ofensas cometidas por los hombres, desde Adán y Eva.
La Encarnación de la Segunda Persona de la Santísima Trinidad, con su Pasión y Muerte en la cruz, fue el medio escogido para restituir a la humanidad caprichosa la plena amistad con Dios. Si Jesús no hubiese asumido sobre sí la deuda contraída por nuestros pecados, imposible sería nuestra reconciliación con Dios y tendríamos para siempre cerradas las puertas del Cielo.
La Cuaresma es también tiempo de oración, cuya esencia, enseña el Catecismo, es la “elevación de la mente a Dios”.
Así, es posible a cualquiera permanecer en oración inclusive durante los actos comunes de la vida, realizándolos con el espíritu dirigido al Cielo. Por tanto, para rezar no es preciso tomar la actitud descarada y orgullosa de los fariseos. Debemos, al contrario, ser discretos en las manifestaciones externas de nuestra piedad particular, evitando gestos o palabras que pongan en realce nuestra propia persona.
Pero si a pesar de eso, nuestra devoción es notada por los otros, no debemos perturbarnos, tranquilicémonos con esta enseñanza de San Agustín: “No hay pecado en ser visto por los hombres, pero sí en proceder con la finalidad de por ellos ser visto”.
La Iglesia nos presenta, por tanto, el espíritu con que se debe vivir la Cuaresma: no hacer buenas obras con vistas a obtener la aprobación de los otros, no ceder al orgullo ni a la vanidad, sino procurar en todo agradar solamente a Dios.
En el ayuno, en la oración o en la práctica de cualquier buena obra, no se puede erigir como fin último el beneficio que de ahí pueda venirnos, pero sí la gloria de Aquel que nos creó. Pues todo cuanto es nuestro -excepción hecha de las imperfecciones, miserias y pecados- pertenece a Dios. Y también nuestros méritos, pues es el propio Jesús quien afirma: ¡“Sin Mí, nada podéis hacer”! (Jn 15, 5).
Así, si tenemos la gracia de practicar un acto bueno, debemos inmediatamente reportarlo al Creador, restituyéndole los méritos, pues estos le pertenecen, y no a nosotros. “Quien se gloria, gloríese en el Señor” (I Cor 1, 31), nos advierte el Apóstol.
Santa Teresa de Jesús así define la humildad: “Dios es la suma verdad, y la humildad consiste en andar en la verdad, pues de gran importancia es no ver cosa buena en sí mismo, pero sí la miseria y la nada”.
Reconozcamos los beneficios que Dios nos da y por ellos rindámosle gracias, no colocándonos jamás como objeto de esa alabanza, juzgando ser nosotros la fuente de cualquier virtud o cualidad.
En esta Cuaresma, busquemos, más aún que la mortificación corporal, aceptar la invitación que el Evangelio sabiamente nos hace, combatiendo el orgullo con todas nuestras fuerzas. Solo estarán a la derecha de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, en el día del Juicio Final, aquellos que hubieren vencido al orgullo y al egoísmo, reconociendo que “todo don precioso y toda dádiva perfecta viene de lo alto” (St 1, 17).
