La historia del festivo árbol comienza en los densos bosques de Alemania, en el siglo VIII. Meses después, al volver a la región del Bajo Hesse, sorprendió horrorizado a algunos nativos que estaban a punto de realizar uno de los holocaustos humanos exigidos por la religión primitiva. Liberando a los nueve niños que iban a ser víctimas, el celoso obispo quiso entonces dar un testimonio público de lo impotentes que son los falsos dioses delante del Cordero de Dios.

Mandó talar un enorme roble de Thor, bajo el que se iba a realizar el sangriento sacrificio. Los sacerdotes paganos le amenazaron con ser fulminado por los rayos del dios del trueno. Sin embargo, derrumbado el árbol, nada sucedió, para humillación de los paganos.
Los relapsos se arrepintieron entonces, y muchos idólatras pidieron el sacramento del bautismo. La caída del árbol de Thor representó la caída del paganismo en aquellas regiones.
Los germanos, ya pacificados y convertidos, adoptaron entonces el pino como símbolo cristiano. Él siempre apunta al cielo y su ramaje eternamente verde nos recuerda Aquél que nos concedió la vida eterna. Bajo sus ramas ya no hay ofrendas crue les, sino los regalos en honra de Cristo recién nacido.
