Aún no caía el sol en la plaza de San Pedro, cuando el Cardenal protodiácono Mamberti anunció al nuevo Pontífice.
León XIV ha salido al balcón de la basílica vaticana y ha hecho un anuncio de paz: La pace sia con tutti voi’, “La paz sea con todos ustedes”, tras lo cual pasó a recordar al Buen Pastor que da la vida por el rebaño, el Cristo resurrecto, de quien estamos viviendo su tiempo pascual.
La pace sia con voi, insistió el Papa León XIV. Esta es la paz de Cristo resucitado, una paz desarmada y desarmante, resaltó.
“El mal no prevalecerá, estamos todos en las manos de Dios, por lo tanto sin temor (…) vayamos adelante (…) Cristo nos precede”, dijo el nuevo Papa.
Agradeció al anterior Pontífice, también quiso agradecerle a todos los cardenales que lo hicieron sucesor de Pedro, y los invitó a caminar unidos, buscando la paz y la justicia, buscando siempre ser fieles a Jesucristo, para proclamar el evangelio y ser misioneros.
“Soy un hijo de San Agustín”, dijo, “agustino”, pero “con ustedes soy cristiano”, afirmó.
“A la Iglesia de Roma un saludo especial”, dijo, emocionando a la Plaza de San Pedro.
Invitó a una Iglesia que construye puentes de diálogo hacia todos, con la caridad, la presencia de diálogo.
Como sorpresa, hizo un saludo en español, dirigiéndose particularmente a su diócesis de Chiclayo “donde un pueblo fiel ha acompañado su obispo y ha compartido su fe”, afirmó. Pero su saludo fue a todos sus hermanos de Italia y del mundo, invitando a ser una Iglesia sinodal y una Iglesia de la caridad.
Pidió también oraciones por su misión, para toda la Iglesia, y por la paz en el mundo, tras lo cual rezó un Avemaría e impartió la bendición Urbi et Orbi.

El Cardenal Robert Francis Prevost Martínez, nacido en Chicago en 1955, es un cardenal estadounidense con una profunda trayectoria misionera y pastoral en América Latina, especialmente en Perú.
Estudió en el seminario menor de los padres agustinos. Tiene un bachillerato en Matemáticas por la Universidad Villanova, con especialización en Filosofía.
También tiene una maestría en divinidad, por la Catholic Theological Union de Chicago. También posee tanto una licenciatura como el doctorado en derecho canónico, obtenido en la universidad Angelicum en Roma.
Misión en Perú: En 1985, inició su labor misionera en Perú, donde trabajó en la formación de seminaristas y en diversas responsabilidades pastorales y administrativas en Chulucanas y Trujillo.
Liderazgo Agustino: Fue elegido Prior General de la Orden de San Agustín en dos períodos consecutivos (2001-2013), lo que le brindó una perspectiva global de la Iglesia.
Obispo en Perú: En 2014, fue nombrado Obispo de Chiclayo, donde consolidó su compromiso con la comunidad local y obtuvo la nacionalidad peruana. Se desempeñó como Vicepresidente segundo de la Conferencia Episcopal Peruana (2018-2023) y presidió la Comisión de Educación y Cultura.
En 2023, Francisco lo nombró Prefecto del Dicasterio para los Obispos y Presidente de la Pontificia Comisión para América Latina, cargos de gran importancia en la Curia Romana.
