Medianoche. En el Real Monasterio de la Inmaculada Concepción, de Quito, el silencio fue roto por las doce campanadas del reloj que indicaba el comienzo del día 2 de febrero de 1594. Poco después entraba en la capilla la joven priora, la Madre Mariana de Jesús Torres.
Con el corazón repleto de amarguras, había ido a implorarle al divino Redentor que por intercesión de su bendita Madre solucionara los problemas que dificultaban la evangelización de aquellas tierras: los malos ejemplos que daban algunos sacerdotes y religiosos indignos, los injustificables desmanes de las autoridades eclesiásticas y civiles, agravado todo ello por manifestaciones de desobediencia en su propio convento. Prosternada con la frente en el duro suelo de piedra, oraba con fervor cuando una dulce voz interrumpió sus plegarias llamándola por su nombre:
—Mariana, hija mía.
Se levantó rápidamente y vio delante de ella a una bellísima Señora, resplandeciente de luz, que tenía en su mano izquierda al Niño Jesús y en la derecha un báculo todo de oro pulido, adornado con piedras preciosas.
—Hermosa Señora, ¿quién sois y qué queréis?—le preguntó, rebosante de felicidad.
—Soy María del Buen Suceso, la Reina del Cielo y de la tierra. Vengo a consolar tu corazón afligido. Empuño en el brazo derecho el báculo que ves, porque quiero gobernar este mi monasterio como Priora y Madre.
Duró cerca de dos horas el coloquio de la humilde monja con la celestial Visitante. Cuando ésta se retiró, tan sólo la tenue luz del candil iluminaba la capilla, pero la Madre Mariana se sentía tan fortalecida como deseosa de luchar y sufrir por amor a Nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
“Es voluntad de mi Hijo que mandes ejecutar una estatua mía”
¡Y no le faltaron sufrimientos y pruebas! Cinco años después, la madrugada del 16 de enero de 1599, se le apareció de nuevo la Santísima Virgen para reconfortarla. Le comunicó los designios de Dios en relación con aquel monasterio, le hizo proféticas revelaciones acerca del futuro de Ecuador y de las persecuciones que allí sufrirían las comunidades religiosas, y agregó:
—Por eso es voluntad de mi Hijo Santísimo que tú misma mandes ejecutar una estatua mía, tal como me ves, y la coloques sobre la cátedra de la priora para que yo desde ahí gobierne mi monasterio, poniendo en mi mano derecha el báculo y las llaves de la clausura en señal de propiedad y autoridad. A mi divino Niño lo harás colocar en mi mano izquierda: primero, para que los mortales entiendan que soy poderosa para aplacar la justicia divina y alcanzar piedad y perdón a toda alma pecadora que a mí acuda con corazón contrito; y segundo, para que mis hijas comprendan que les muestro y les doy como modelo de su perfección religiosa a mi Hijo Santísimo; vengan ellas a mí para que yo les conduzca a Él.
“Ningún otro escultor será digno de esta gracia”
La religiosa ponderó con timidez:
—Linda Señora, vuestra hermosura me encanta. ¡Oh, si me fuera dado dejar la tierra ingrata para elevarme con Vos al Cielo! Mas permitidme que os haga saber que ninguna persona humana, por más entendida que fuese en el arte de la escultura, podrá trabajar en madera vuestra encantadora imagen, tal como me pedís. Enviad para esto a mi Seráfico Padre a fin de que él labre esta obra en madera escogida, teniendo como oficiales a los ángeles del Cielo, porque no sabría explicar ni menos podría saber y dar la estatura de vuestra talla.
—Nada te atemorice, hija mía — contestó la Virgen—, atenderé tu petición. En cuanto a mi altura mídela tú misma con el cordón seráfico que traes a tu cintura.
La joven priora hizo una reverente objeción:
—Hermosa Señora, mi Madre querida, ¿atreverme yo a tocar vuestra frente divina, cuando los espíritus angélicos pueden hacerlo? Vos sois el arca viva de la alianza entre los pobres mortales y Dios; y si Osa cayó muerto sólo por el hecho de haber tocado el Arca santa para evitar que cayese al suelo [cf. 2 Sam 6, 6-7], cuán-to más yo, mujer pobre y débil…
—Me alegra tu humilde temor y veo el amor ardiente a tu Madre del Cielo que te habla; trae y pon en mi mano derecha tu cordón y tú con la otra extremidad toca mis pies.
Temblando de júbilo, de amor y reverencia, la religiosa hizo lo que María Santísima le ordenaba, y ésta prosiguió:
—Aquí tienes, hija mía, la medida de tu Madre del Cielo; entrégala a mi siervo Francisco del Castillo, explicándole mis facciones y mi postura. Él trabajará exteriormente mi imagen porque es de conciencia delicada y observa escrupulosamente los Mandamientos de Dios y de la Iglesia; ningún otro escultor será digno de esta gracia. Tú ayúdalo con tus oraciones y con tu humilde sufrimiento.
“Recurriendo a mí, aplacarán la ira divina”
En otra aparición, en la misma hora de las anteriores, es decir, poco después de las doce campanadas de la medianoche, la Virgen Madre de Dios prenunció una época calamitosa para la Iglesia en Ecuador, tiempos en los que casi no se encontraría inocencia en los niños, ni pudor en las mujeres, y añadió:
—Con todo esto sufrirán tus sucesoras; ellas aplacarán la ira divina recurriendo a mí bajo la advocación del Buen Suceso, cuya imagen pido y mando que hagas ejecutar para consuelo y sustento de mi monasterio y de los fieles de ese tiempo. Esta devoción será el pararrayo colocado entre la justicia divina y el mundo prevaricador. Hoy mismo, cuando amanezca, irás a hablar con el obispo y le dirás que yo te pido que mandes esculpir mi imagen para que sea colocada a la cabeza de mi comunidad, a fin de tomar posesión completa de aquello que por tantos títulos me pertenece. Él deberá consagrar mi imagen con el sagrado óleo y le pondrá el nombre de María del Buen Suceso de la Purificación o Candelaria.
E insistió:
—Ahora es preciso que mandes ejecutar con presteza mi santa imagen, tal cual me ves, y te apresures a colocarla en el lugar que te indiqué.
“La perfección de la obra corre por mi cuenta”
La humilde religiosa repitió la misma tímida objeción que había hecho cinco años antes:

Nuestra Señora tomó una de las extremidades del cordón y la puso en su frente, dejando a la extasiada monja que hiciera otro tanto en el pie derecho. El cordón era un poco corto, pero se estiró milagrosamente, como elástico, hasta alcanzar la estatura de la celestial Dama.
Facciones semejantes a las de la Madre que está en el Cielo
“Hoy mismo, cuando amanezca, irás a hablar con el obispo”, le había mandado la Virgen Santísima a la Madre Mariana. No obstante, previendo diversos obstáculos iba atrasando el cumplimiento de la orden recibida. Doce días después se le apareció de nuevo, resplandeciente de luz como siempre, pero esta vez silenciosa y mirándola con amable severidad.
Tras oír una maternal advertencia, seguida de explicaciones que deshicieron todos sus temores, respondió la religiosa:
—Bella Señora, justa es vuestra reprensión. Os pido perdón y misericordia, y prometo enmendarme. Hoy mismo hablaré con el obispo para comenzar la ejecución de vuestra imagen.
De hecho, ese mismo día expuso a Mons. Salvador de Ribera la orden recibida de la Reina del Cielo. Francisco del Castillo recibió esa incumbencia como una insigne gracia de Nuestra Señora y rechazó categóricamente cualquier pago por sus servicios. Dedicó varios días buscando en Quito y en los alrededores la mejor madera, y enseguida se puso manos a la obra. Trabajaba con tanto amor, y sentía tamaña consolación que no conseguía contener las lágrimas.
Pronto surgieron bienhechores para las tres importantes piezas de orfebrería: las llaves, la corona y el báculo. A petición de las monjas, el escultor realizó todo el servicio no en su taller, sino en el coro alto del monasterio.
De su rostro salían rayos de luz
Se había fijado para el día 2 de febrero de 1611 la solemne bendición litúrgica de la imagen sagrada. Tres semanas antes de ese plazo, faltaba solamente un “pequeño” detalle: darle al rostro un colorido digno de la cara de la Santa Virgen de las vírgenes. Decidió el maestro Del Castillo hacer una última pesquisa en busca de las mejores tintas; marchó con ese objetivo, y prometió estar de vuelta el 16 de enero para ejecutar la delicada operación, de lejos la más importante de sus obras.
Grande era la expectativa de las religiosas cuando, al amanecer del día 16 se dirigían a la capilla para, como de costumbre, alabar a Nuestra Señora con el canto del Pequeño Oficio. Al acercarse al coro alto comenzaron a escuchar melodiosas armonías que las dejaron llenas de emoción. Entraron presurosas y… ¡oh prodigio!, una luz celestial inundaba todo el recinto, en el cual resonaban arrebatadoras voces de ángeles que cantaban el himno Salve Sancta Parens (Dios te Salve, Santa Madre).
Entonces se dieron cuenta del portentoso hecho: la imagen estaba milagrosamente concluida.
Desbordantes de admiración, contemplaban aquel celestial rostro, del que salían rayos de luz que iluminaban toda la iglesia. Aureolada por esa luz vivísima, la fisonomía de la santa imagen se mostraba majestuosa, serena, dulce, amable y atrayente, como invitando a sus hijas a que se acercaran con confianza a darle un filial abrazo de júbilo y de bienvenida. El semblante del Niño Jesús expresaba amor y ternura para con aquellas esposas suyas tan amadas por Él y por su Madre. Ese día todas progresaron en la vida espiritual, y comprendiendo mejor su propia vocación, pasaban a amar más y más a su divino Esposo y se empeñaban en el cumplimiento exacto de la Regla y de las obligaciones particulares.
