La misericordia atrajo el mayor milagro de la Historia

Después del pecado original, la humanidad había contraído una deuda con el Creador. Normalmente, cuando alguien debe determinada cantidad a otro, le paga exactamente el débito o, a veces, le devuelve con intereses. Sin embargo, ¿cómo podría el hombre, finito como es, satisfacer lo Infinito? Solo alguien Infinito podría ofrecer, con idéntica dignidad, la paga al Dios infinito, en lugar de los hombres finitos: este fue precisamente el motivo de la Encarnación de Jesucristo. 1
Entretanto, consideremos un poco la amplitud de tal satisfacción, que manifiesta un gran amor de Dios para con nosotros y un reflejo tan alto del poder divino que escapa completamente tanto a la reflexión humana cuanto a la angélica, 2 pues, «[…] al encarnarse en el seno purísimo de María, Nuestro Señor hizo el milagro negativo de asumir un sufrimiento corporal». 3 Es el misterio que pasma toda criatura: ¡Él vino a nuestra humanidad, sin dejar la divinidad, para ser inmolado en el Sagrado Madero y, así, comprar y reatar nuestra amistad con Dios!

De hecho, milagro es aquello que hace Dios, cuya causa nos es oculta. 4 Muchas veces, es la transformación de algo pequeño, o hasta insignificante, en obra de gran valor. Por ejemplo, nadie prestaba mucha atención al cojo que estaba en la Puerta del Templo pidiendo limosna (cf. At 3, 1-2). Suponemos que las personas debían, de vez en cuando, compadecerse y darle algún óbolo. Pero, pocos años después de su muerte, ¿quién se acordaría de él? De seguro, la Historia no conocería jamás su existencia si un día no hubiese sido blanco del retumbante milagro de volver a caminar, por la virtud del nombre de Jesús (cf. At 3, 6-9). Digamos haber sido esto un milagro «positivo». Pero ¿qué sería hacer un milagro «negativo»? Sería como si el mismo cojo fuese un hombre atlético, activo y de muy buen porte físico y, cierto día, uno de los Apóstoles, mirando bien para él, ordenase el «milagro» de instantáneamente quedar deficiente. Llamaríamos esto de desgracia, pues es algo negativo, y nunca de prodigio.

Un milagro «negativo»

Ahora, Nuestro Señor Jesucristo quiso asumir sobre sí, por su misericordia infinita, las deficiencias corporales de la naturaleza humana 5 y así lavarnos de la infelicidad del pecado. ¡Paradoja mayor no hay, por ser Él el Inocente! Es lo que Dios deseó hacer por nosotros: «Se encarnó por nuestra salvación» (Dz 40), «realizando un milagro contra Sí mismo, pues prefirió tomar un cuerpo sufrido», 6 ¡Aquel que por su vida en la gloria no podía padecer!

¡Qué la misericordia del Todo-Poderoso no es capaz de hacer! ¡Cuánto poder! Muchos milagros en la Historia ya hubo, siempre para mejor; sin embargo, hasta lo ínfimo, y no para con otros, sino para consigo mismo, solo Uno tuvo coraje de hacer, con el fin de rescatar a los que Él ama.

La humildad fue asumida por la Majestad, la debilidad, por la Fuerza, la mortalidad, por la Eternidad. Para saldar la deuda de nuestra condición humana, la naturaleza impasible se unió a la naturaleza pasible. […] Asumió la condición de esclavo, sin mancha de pecado, engrandeciendo lo humano sin disminuir lo divino. Porque el aniquilamiento, por el cual lo invisible se tornó visible, y el Creador de todo quiso ser uno de los mortales, fue una condescendencia de su misericordia, no una falla de su poder. […] Entró, por tanto, el Hijo en este mundo tan pequeño, descendiendo del trono celeste, pero sin dejar la gloria del Padre; es engendrado y nace de modo totalmente nuevo. De modo nuevo porque, siendo invisible en sí mismo, se torna visible como nosotros; incomprensible, quiso ser comprendido; existiendo antes de los tiempos, comenzó a existir en el tiempo. El Señor del universo asume la condición de esclavo, envolviendo en sombra la inmensidad de su majestad; el Dios impasible no rechazó ser hombre pasible, el inmortal se sometió a las leyes de la muerte. […] Con todo, ni Dios sufre cambio con esta condescendencia de su misericordia ni el hombre es destruido con su elevación a tan alta dignidad. 7
