En el conjunto de la Creación, el hombre se asemeja a un misterioso «joyero» en el cual Dios ha depositado los más diversos y preciosos dones. Uno de ellos, especial entre todos, es el de la palabra.
Pocas veces en nuestro quehacer cotidiano consideramos su importancia y continuamente la utilizamos de modo irreflexivo. No obstante, se puede transformar en un poderoso instrumento de edificación, si es bien utilizada, o en una peligrosa arma de destrucción…
En efecto, son incontables las almas que se han convertido a las vías de la santidad movidas por santas predicaciones o por la lectura de la Palabra de Dios; y quizá más numerosas aún sean las que han perseverado en la virtud debido a un sabido consejo de un hermano en la fe. Por otra parte, el mal uso de esa capacidad arrastró y todavía arrastra a multitudes hacia la perdición y puede llegar a producir efectos devastadores en sus víctimas, principalmente por medio de un conocido vicio: la maledicencia.
¿Quién eres tú para juzgar a tu hermano?
Consistiendo esencialmente en el empleo de la facultad de expresión para evidenciar y propagar algo malo, existente o no, de otro, la maledicencia fácilmente encuentra terreno fértil en el alma humana.
Como nadie está exento de defectos y lagunas, es natural que la convivencia, incluso entre los que se quieren mucho, tienda al desgaste: poco a poco, y con frecuencia de manera no culpable, el brillo de las cualidades ajenas empieza a disminuir a los ojos de sus prójimos y pasa a constatar las debilidades. En ese momento es cuando se presenta el peligro. Si no se toma cuidado, enseguida son olvidados por completo los lados buenos de los demás y considerados, injustamente, sólo sus lados defectibles… Como «de lo que rebosa el corazón habla la boca», en esa etapa el tentador convence sin dificultad para que se hagan públicos esos defectos que se han encontrado o se han imaginado encontrar.
Sea como fuere, nadie tiene el derecho de hacer conocidas las miserias del prójimo. Si Dios, único Juez verdadero y principal ofendido por las faltas de los hombres, no lo hace, ¿quién podrá hacerlo? A los que se creen aptos para ello, bien se les aplica la exclamación de la Escritura: ¿quién eres tú para juzgar a tu hermano? (cf. Sant 4, 12).
Además, quien publica las faltas de los otros hace mal a los que las escuchan, tanto por el escándalo que pueden causar como por la posible inducción al propio vicio de la maledicencia. ¡Ay de los que provocan el escándalo! ¡Más les valdría que les ataran al cuello una piedra de molino y los arrojaran al mar (cf. Lc 17, 1-2)!
Hay que considerar también esta enseñanza del divino Maestro: «No juzguéis, y no seréis juzgados; no condenéis, y no seréis condenados; perdonad, y seréis perdonados; dad, y se os dará: os verterán una medida generosa, colmada, remecida, rebosante, pues con la medida con que midiereis se os medirá a vosotros» (Lc 6, 37-38).
Remedio para las almas débiles
Hay una categoría de personas que se deja contaminar por la maledicencia por debilidad. Abatida por el peso de las miserias ajenas, procura «desahogar» sus penas y resentimientos con comentarios inoportunos. A esas almas, la moral católica les ofrece un remedio superior y eficaz: la admiración.
En un ambiente impregnado de admiración, la «cizaña» de la maledicencia no encuentra espacio para desarrollarse. Hace al hombre semejante a un colibrí que, acercándose a las flores, va derecho al néctar e ignora los abrojos: el admirativo se ocupa con tanto agrado de las cualidades de los demás que no le sobra atención para considerar los defectos.
Pero para lograr tal nobleza de alma no basta el simple esfuerzo humano… Es necesario juntar las manos y rogarle a Dios, por intercesión de la Virgen, el auxilio superabundante de la gracia. Así confortado por lo sobrenatural, el hombre se vuelve capaz no sólo de exaltar los lados buenos de sus compañeros, sino de disponerse a sanar sus debilidades y ser para ellos un auxilio en la lucha por la virtud.
Finalmente, la admiración es también la solución para los pecados de maledicencia ya cometidos. Como la doctrina católica exige que se restituya el honor del prójimo, denigrado ante los demás, ningún medio podría ser más eficaz que pasar a elogiar sus cualidades.
Castigo a los obstinados
Sin embargo, en las vías del mal uso de la lengua también hay almas empedernidas, hijas del odio, que se convierte en calumniadoras de aquellos que practican el bien y que, por lo tanto, constituyen una denuncia a la torpeza de sus vidas.
Para los perversos de toda la Historia, atribuirles públicamente y de mala fe delitos infundados a las almas justas ha sido uno de los medios más eficaces de persecución, pues los falsos testimonios encuentran siempre morada en la superficialidad y molicie de los corazones… Pocos son los íntegros y valientes que se preocupan en analizar con profundidad los hechos, para sacar de ellos una conclusión verdadera; la mayoría, por el contrario, oye con complacencia, negligencia y respeto humano las criminales acusaciones y no se opone a quien las hace, volviéndose, según Santo Tomás de Aquino,1 partícipe del mismo pecado.
Es lo que hicieron con el Redentor durante su vida pública hasta que, finalmente, lo condenaron al suplicio de la cruz en virtud de crímenes que jamás había cometido. El pueblo judío, beneficiado por Él con toda clase de milagros, curaciones y gracias celestiales, en lugar de defender la evidente inocencia del Cordero divino prefirió ceder negligentemente al odio de los ancianos y maestros de la ley.
A las insaciables almas viperinas, no obstante, la Providencia —que está celosa por sus elegidos— reserva el castigo profetizado en el Libro de los Salmos: «Lengua embustera, […] Dios te destruirá para siempre, te abatirá y te barrerá de tu tienda; arrancará tus raíces del suelo vital» (51, 6-7). Los calumniadores no tienen duración en la tierra: tarde o temprano el infortunio los sorprenderá (cf. Sal 139, 12).
¡Seamos hijos fieles de la Santa Iglesia!
En su epístola, el apóstol Santiago resume muy bien la primordial importancia del don de la palabra: «Si alguien no falta en el hablar, ese es un hombre perfecto, capaz de controlar también todo su cuerpo. A los caballos les metemos el freno en la boca para que ellos nos obedezcan, y así dirigimos a todo el animal. Fijaos también que los barcos, siendo tan grandes e impulsados por vientos tan recios, se dirigen con un timón pequeñísimo por donde el piloto quiere navegar. Lo mismo pasa con la lengua: es un órgano pequeño, pero alardea de grandezas» (3, 2-5).
Sepamos, pues, utilizar con santidad esa arma que ha sido puesta en nuestras manos. Refrenemos nuestra lengua y coloquémosla bajo el dulce yugo de la admiración. Así, la benevolencia divina nos acompañará.
Sobre todo, como fieles hijos de la Santa Iglesia en estos tiempos de tribulación, estemos vigilantes a las voces infernales que contra ella se levantan y presentémonos con prontitud y ufanía en su defensa, convencidos de que ella es siempre inmaculada e indefectible, digna de toda alabanza. ◊
