Los cinco oficios que son propios de los Ángeles

No es raro encontrar quien piense que los Santos Ángeles están siempre desocupados, y pasan la eternidad tocando lánguidas arpas, distraídos de todo cuanto les circundan… ¡Triste apreciación sobre estos espíritus abrazados de amor a Dios, y repletos de celo por su causa!

Según San Roberto Belarmino, podemos deducir de las Sagradas Escrituras cinco principales oficios que Dios confió a los Santos Ángeles:

El primer oficio.

El primero de ellos, y el más importante de todos, es cantar continuamente alabanzas e himnos al Creador. Eso puede parecer confirmar la teoría que encima condenamos. Sin embargo, nosotros hombres, tantas veces llevados por la agitación y la correría de la vida moderna, no sabemos dar el debido valor a Dios, y por eso menospreciamos el culto que le debemos.

Lejos de ser un acto de aquello que se acostumbra erróneamente llamar de «beaterio», el culto que los Ángeles prestan a su Creador es como una llamarada cuya más minúscula chispa sería suficiente para abrazar el universo. Nos es difícil comprender esa sublime realidad, pero imagina, querido lector, que fueses llamado a cantar un himno de alabanza al Papa.

¿Considerarías eso un acto de «beaterio», o una honra suprema? Así, comprendemos en cuánta estima Dios tiene esa función, a la cual destinó no a los menores, sino a los Ángeles más sublimes.

Oye a Isaías: «Vi al Señor sentado sobre un alto y elevado trono, y las franjas de su vestido llenaban el Templo. Los Serafines estaban por encima del trono; cada uno de ellos tenía seis alas; con dos cubrían su rostro, y con dos cubrían los pies, y con dos volaban. Y clamaban uno para el otro, y decían: Santo, Santo, Santo es el Señor Dios de los ejércitos toda la tierra está llena de su gloria». (Is. 6, 1-3)

«Tú los ves velar el rostro y los pies, lo que es señal de gran respeto, como si no osasen fijar la mirada en el rostro de Dios, ni mostrarles los pies. Tú los ves volar continuamente mientras cantan lo que demuestra su gran amor a Dios y el deseo de aproximarse cada vez más a Él». [1]

Vemos que para agradar al «Señor de los ejércitos» son necesarias esas dos virtudes: el amor y la veneración. A través del cántico los Ángeles manifiestan su caridad; velando respetuosamente el rostro y los pies demuestran respeto, temor y veneración.

«De cuánta veneración Dios es digno, si los supremos Príncipes del Cielo, que siempre lo asisten y siempre ven su rostro, ni por la tan grande elevación de su grado, ni por tan larga convivencia con Él, osan jamás descuidar el temor y la veneración que les deben, mientras cantan sus alabanzas.

«¿Qué responderás tú, polvo y ceniza, cuando en el día del Juicio, fueres acusado de somnolencia, y de distracción en una acción tan divina, a la que no eras digno de ser llamado? Aprende por lo menos para el futuro, instruido por tan insigne ejemplo, a incitarte, a cantar a tu Dios los debidos himnos de alabanzas, con temor y tremor, con atención y vigilancia, con amor y deseo.» [2]

El segundo oficio.

El segundo consiste en presentar a Dios las oraciones de los hombres, y de interceder por ellos. Eso lo certifica claramente la Escritura:

«Cuando tú orabas con lágrimas, y enterrabas a los muertos, y dejabas tu cena, yo [San Gabriel] presenté tus oraciones al Señor». (Tob. 12,12)

Y en el libro del Apocalipsis San Juan describe una visión en la cual un Ángel portaba un turíbulo de oro a la espera de incienso, que eran las oraciones de los Santos, a fin de ofrecerlo a Dios. (Cf Ap 8,3)

Que gran gesto de bondad haber Dios establecido tan poderosos intercesores. No satisfecho en enviar Profetas que nos exhortasen, y hasta incluso a su propio Hijo Unigénito para redimirnos, quiso además constituir a los Ángeles como vehículo para hacer llegar al Creador nuestras oraciones.

¿Cuál no debe ser nuestra confianza y abandono en las manos de esos guardianes? No apenas celosos en cumplir este oficio por ser voluntad de Dios, lo hacen por amor a nosotros que somos, en el orden de la gracia, sus hermanos y coherederos de la misma bienaventuranza, destinados a vivir juntos por toda eternidad.

El tercer oficio.

El tercero es el de anunciar a los hombres los asuntos más importantes de Dios, como lo es la redención y la salvación eterna. En efecto así habla el Apóstol en su Epístola a los Hebreos: «¿No son, por ventura, todos ellos (los Ángeles) espíritus administradores, enviados para servir a favor de aquellos que han de heredar la salvación?» (Hb 1,14)

Fue un Ángel que anunció a Zacarías el nacimiento del Precursor: «Yo soy Gabriel, aquel que está delante de Dios, y fui enviado para hablarte y anunciar esta Buena Nueva.» (Lc 1,19) Y a la Virgen María anunció el mayor de todos los acontecimientos habidos en la historia de la humanidad:

«Al sexto mes, el ángel Gabriel fue enviado por Dios a una ciudad de Galilea llamada Nazaret, a una Virgen desposada con un hombre llamado José, de la casa de David; y el nombre de la Virgen era María. Le dijo el ángel: ‘María, no temas, pues encontraste gracia delante de Dios. Concebirás en tu seno y darás a luz un hijo, al cual pondrás el nombre de Jesús. Él será grande y se llamará Hijo del Altísimo. El Señor Dios le dará el trono de su padre David, reinará eternamente sobre la casa de Jacob y su reinado no tendrá fin’ « . (Lc 1,26-27,30-33)

Podríamos también citar muchos otros episodios: después de la resurrección del Señor, a las mujeres que estaban en el Sepulcro, (Mt 28, 2-5) y después de la Ascensión, a todos sus Discípulos. (At 1, 10-11).

«La razón por la que Dios -que está en todo lugar, y puede por sí mismo hablar fácilmente al corazón de los hombres- quiere todavía mandar Ángeles, es, a lo que parece, para que los hombres sepan que Dios tiene el cuidado de las cosas humanas, y que es para ellos que gobierna y dirige el universo.

«Además de eso, los hombres podrían juzgar fácilmente, a veces, que sus inspiraciones divinas no eran sino sus propios pensamientos, o fruto de su propia imaginación. Pero cuando ven, u oyen que Ángeles son mandados por Dios, y que aquello que esos Ángeles predicen ocurre puntualmente como habían dicho, no pueden dudar de que la Providencia de Dios gobierna las cosas humanas, y dirige y dispone particularmente aquellas que conciernen a la salvación eterna de los electos.» [3]

El cuarto oficio.

El cuarto oficio angélico es el de proteger a los hombres. Eso puede darse individualmente o en conjunto. Dios»confía a sus potentísimos siervos a la debilidad de los mortales, a fin de que cuiden de ellos como los preceptores de los niños, los tutores de sus pupilos, los abogados de sus partes, los pastores de sus ovejas, los médicos de los enfermos, los defensores de sus protegidos, o como los protectores de aquellos que son incapaces de defenderse si no se abrigan debajo de las alas de los poderosos.»

Así lo testifica David cuando dice: «Mandó a sus Ángeles cerca de ti, que te guarden en todos tus caminos.» (Sl 99,11) El propio Cristo, siempre verdadero, lo certifica: «Mirad, no despreciéis alguno de estos pequeñitos, porque yo os digo que sus Ángeles en los Cielos ven siempre el rostro de mi Padre, que está en los Cielos». (Mt 18,10) San Juan, en el Apocalipsis, menciona al Ángel de la Iglesia de Éfeso, el Ángel de la Iglesia de Esmirna, y también los Ángeles de otras Iglesias. (Cf Ap 2, 1-8)

«De modo que en cada Nación hay dos Jefes: uno visible, hombre, y uno invisible, Ángel; y en cada Iglesia dos son los Obispos: uno visible, hombre, y uno invisible, Ángel; y en la Iglesia Católica Universal hay dos Sumos Pontífices, establecidos por Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, uno visible, hombre, y uno invisible, Ángel, el cual creemos ser el Arcángel San Miguel, venerado primero como protector por la Sinagoga de los Judíos, y venerado ahora por la Iglesia de los Cristianos, como su protector.» [5]

¿Qué decir de la ingratitud de despreciar semejante auxilio? Tenemos un Ángel designado por Dios para custodiarnos ininterruptamente y hacemos poco caso?… ¿Cómo extraviarse de las sendas de la virtud teniendo a nuestro lado, y siempre a nuestra disposición, un tan admirable Consejero? ¿Cómo desanimar y desistir de recurrir al auxilio sobrenatural en nuestras contrariedades y fracasos, y, hasta incluso pecados y vicios, cuando tenemos alguien dispuesto a escucharnos y curar las heridas de nuestra alma?

¡Oh terrible juicio nos aguarda si no cambiamos nuestra conducta con nuestro celeste Guardián! No tendremos que cosa alegar delante del Juez, pues nos dio la más excelente protección, el Consejero más sabio y el Protector más perspicaz para guardarnos.

El quinto oficio.

«Es de ser soldados, o jefes armados para tomar venganza de las naciones y reprender a los pueblos. (Sl 149, 7)

«Son esos Ángeles que quemaron con el fuego y el azufre las ciudades infames (Gn 19,24); que mataron a todos los primogénitos de Egipto (Ex 12, 29); que postraron muchos millares de Asirios con un solo golpe (IV Reis, 19,35); serán esos Ángeles que en el día final separarán a los hombres malos, de los justos, y los lanzarán en el fuego ardiente del infierno. (Mt 13, 41, 42)

«Amén, pues, los hombres piadosos sus conciudadanos los santos Ángeles; tiemblen los impíos delante del poder de los Ángeles, administradores de la cólera de Dios Omnipotente, de cuyas manos nadie podrá librarlos.»
