La Oración es el diálogo con Dios.
Para muchos, la oración es meramente la recitación de palabras memorizadas o leídas. Entretanto, ella posee un sentido más profundo y sobrenatural: es «el diálogo del hombre con Dios» 1, la «elevación de la mente a Dios»
La oración, el diálogo con Dios, es un bien incomparable, porque nos pone en comunión íntima con Dios. Así como los ojos del cuerpo son iluminados cuando reciben la luz, el alma que se eleva para Dios es iluminada por su luz inefable. Hablo de la oración que no es solo una actitud exterior, sino que proviene del corazón y no se limita a ocasiones u horas determinadas, prolongándose día y noche, sin interrupción.
El hombre puede convertir un simple trabajo en oración, pues cualquier acto de virtud, cuando realizado por un motivo sobrenatural, es considerado como tal.
No debemos orientar el pensamiento hacia Dios apenas cuando nos aplicamos a la oración; también en medio de las más variadas tareas […] es preciso conservar siempre vivos el deseo y el recuerdo de Dios. Y así, todas nuestras obras, condimentadas con la sal del amor de Dios, se tornarán un alimento dulcísimo para el Señor del universo. Podemos, entretanto, gozar continuamente en nuestra vida del bien que resulta de la oración, si le dedicamos todo el tiempo que nos es posible.

La Oración es el alimento del alma.

Es propio a la naturaleza humana alimentarse, una vez que, sin los nutrientes necesarios, acaba por desfallecer. Lo mismo ocurre con el alma, la cual, para subsistir, precisa de un alimento espiritual que la robustezca y anime. Ese nutriente divino es la oración conforme atestigua San Agustín:
«La oración es todavía el alimento del alma, porque así como el cuerpo no se puede sustentar sin alimento; sin la oración no se puede conservar la vida del alma. Como el cuerpo, por la comida, así el alma del hombre es conservada por la oración». 6
Lo que hay de más elevado en el hombre no es el cuerpo, sino el alma, visto que el cuerpo languidece y se corrompe, y el alma, entretanto, es inmortal. ¡Cómo somos celosos en sustentar el cuerpo y relajados en el deber de vivificar el alma!
Si supiésemos tomar la oración como remedio para nuestra debilidad, mucho más haríamos para la gloria de Dios.
La oración es, por tanto, la fuerza de los débiles y socorro de aquellos que caen en el abismo del pecado, vencedora de los incrédulos, fortaleza de los Santos, verdadero vigor del alma.
El más fuerte de los guerreros, adornado de la más preciosa armadura, será considerado como incapacitado para la guerra si no sabe doblar las rodillas y con humildad recurrir a Aquel de quien procede toda victoria. Ese es el tesoro que nos «concede todas las gracias pedidas, vence todas las fuerzas del enemigo; […] transforma a los ciegos en iluminados, los débiles en fuertes, los pecadores en santos». 7
Luego, ¿quién no recurrirá a tan valioso don? «¿Quién hay en el mundo más excelente que la oración? ¿Qué cosa más útil y provechosa? ¿Qué cosa más dulce y más suave? ¿Qué cosa más alta y más sublime en toda nuestra religión cristiana?»
