Una desconocida historia…

Estaba concluyendo la Belle Époque,1 un tiempo marcado por la búsqueda del disfrute de la vida, de la alegría liviana y relajada y por grandes adelantos científicos e industriales que le proporcionaban al hombre la sensación de seguridad, estabilidad y autosuficiencia. Sin embargo, todo caminaba a pasos agigantados hacia un trágico final: la Primera Guerra Mundial.

En ese contexto histórico fue cuando la empresa naviera White Star Line, a iniciativa de su presidente, Joseph Bruce Ismay, terminó la construcción del Titanic, cuyo viaje inaugural, con destino a Nueva York, partiría del puerto de Southampton el 10 de abril de 1912.

Aquel día el sol había despuntado particularmente luminoso, el cielo se mostraba límpido y una suave brisa recorría la ciudad, mientras que las aves parecían volar con más vivacidad que la de costumbre. Todo concurría a presagiar el éxito del mayor transatlántico jamás construido.

Se dice que una ilustre dama de la sociedad inglesa, apellidada Cadwell, mientras observaba cómo el personal de cubierta cargaba el equipaje, le preguntó a uno de los mozos:

—¿Es verdad que este barco es insumergible?

—Así es, señora. ¡Ni Dios lo hunde! —le contestó.

Osada afirmación… No obstante, aquellas palabras no sólo representaban la opinión de un simple marinero, sino que reflejaba el estado de espíritu laico y cautivado por el progreso que impregnaba la sociedad inglesa de la época. El gigantesco buque alucinó a las mentes tanto de los que lo construyeron como de aquellos que en él embarcaron.

Grande y diversa reunión social

El Titanic salió de Southampton con más de 2000 pasajeros a bordo, entre ellos nobles y millonarios, miembros de la alta sociedad de la época y el propio Bruce Ismay. Varios eran habituales en los viajes liderados por el renombrado capitán Edward Smith, que, a sus 62 años, navegaría por última vez al mando.

A parte de los magnates y gente adinerada que constituían la primera y la segunda clase, a bordo iba una tercera, compuesta por emigrantes que se dirigían a Estados Unidos llenos de esperanza, confiados en obtener en el Nuevo Mundo una considerable fortuna que les permitiera escapar de su condición obrera.

Más que una común y corriente travesía por el Atlántico, ese viaje podría ser considerado como una grande y diversa reunión social. En las distintas cubiertas del moderno barco, personas de todas las condiciones recorrían optimistas el delicioso «mar de los sueños» que el mundo ilusamente les ofrecía.

Despreocupados, rumbo al desastre

El domingo 14 de abril el día rayó también sereno y soleado. A las 9 h, no obstante, el radiotelegrafista recibió un mensaje del Caronia, una embarcación que navegaba por aquella zona, en el que se les avisaba de la presencia de hielo en la superficie marina. Nadie, sin embargo, le dio mucha importancia al asunto.

A las 13:40 h, un nuevo recado, esta vez enviado por el Baltic, otro transatlántico de la White Star Line, en donde se alertaba acerca de una gran cantidad de icebergs exactamente en la ruta que el Titanic estaba siguiendo. El telegrafista transmitió la noticia al puente de mando y el oficial responsable la encaminó al capitán Smith.

Éste, como era la hora de la comida, decidió terminarla tranquilamente y después se dirigió al castillo de popa en busca del presidente de la compañía, que paseaba por allí; tras recibir el mensaje se guardó el papel en el bolsillo y siguió andando.

A lo largo de la cadena de mando nadie quiso preocuparse con el peligro. Todos preferían endosárselo a un superior o dejar de lado aquel «fastidio» que amenazaba con estropearles tan agradable travesía.

No tardaron en llegar nuevas advertencias, en esta ocasión del SS Amerika y del SS Californian, pero el operador de radio, Jack Philips, optimista como todos, no los tomó en cuenta.

La falta de vigilancia y la vergonzosa despreocupación que tantas veces preceden a los grandes desastres ocurridos en la Historia se extendían por aquella tripulación… Su actitud omisa y absurda anunciaba la inevitable tragedia: en unos instantes tendría lugar la colisión.

Investigaciones posteriores levantaron la sospecha de que la decisión de no reducir la velocidad del barco ni alterar su rumbo se debió a la presión ejercida sobre el comandante por el presidente de la compañía, Bruce Ismay2… La amplia experiencia del capitán Smith le hacía consciente del peligro que los icebergs significaban en aquellas aguas. Pero le pareció más importante colaborar en mantener el prestigio de la compañía y evitar maniobras que impidieran finalizar la travesía en el tiempo estimado…

Además, no era plausible pensar que aquel buque tan grande, potente y bien construido llegara a hundirse en plena época de éxitos y desarrollo.

Por la noche, el capitán se retiró sin darle mayor importancia a la gravedad de la situación. Mientras las estrellas cintilaban en la bóveda oscura de un cielo sin luna, las luces de los salones y los camarotes se iban apagando poco a poco. En el barco reinaba la calma; en el mar los icebergs se acercaban amenazadores…

Astuta acción del demonio

La ceguera y consecuente inacción ante el peligro tan inminente nos resultan angustiadoras y nos llevan a preguntarnos qué motivo habría para tan grande «bobada» colectiva.

Ahora bien, analizando los hechos más profundamente, se percibe en ese episodio histórico la presencia discreta, casi inapreciable del demonio, maestro en usar una táctica sagaz y muy eficaz en sus confabulaciones.

Para que se entienda mejor, pensemos cómo actúa el cáncer sobre una persona. Se trata de una enfermedad potencialmente mortal, cuyo principal peligro está en el hecho de ser, al comienzo, imperceptible. Las células afectadas van formando silenciosamente tumores en el organismo y cuando el individuo empieza a sentir sus síntomas, el daño ya es, muchas veces, irreversible.

Así también se comporta Satanás. Su trampa consiste en influenciar a las almas al actuar con discreción. Cuando la persona se da cuenta de su presencia, mil y un defectos y miserias ya han echado raíces en su alma, haciéndose dificilísimo combatirlos.

Ahora bien, esa no es la peor artimaña del enemigo infernal. Existe un medio más nocivo para atentar contra los hijos de Dios: ¡revestirse con apariencias de bien! Son los «lobos rapaces» que se disfrazan de «buenas ovejas» contra los cuales nos alerta el divino Redentor en el Evangelio (cf. Mt 7, 15).

En esas ocasiones, el mal se presenta bajo el velo de supuesta virtud para corroer sin obstáculos a su presa. Embriagada por la belleza, suavidad y blancura que cree constatar en la falsa oveja, la víctima no logra discernir nada de malo o peligroso y se deja devorar. De nada sirven, habitualmente, las advertencias que le son hechas.

Siendo así, se podría afirmar que el estado de espíritu de los tripulantes y pasajeros del Titanic tuvo su origen en un terrible «cáncer» llamado mundanismo. O, tal vez, que fueron atacados por un lobo feroz disfrazado de inocente oveja, conocido como progreso humano.

Veían este mundo traicionero como un mar de placeres inofensivos, maravillosos e interminables, cuando, en realidad, es sólo el campo de batalla transitorio en el cual se decide nuestro destino eterno. Confiaban en los avances de la ciencia y de la tecnología hasta el punto de considerarse inmunes a cualquier desastre, como si nuestras vidas no fueran gobernadas desde lo alto por el Dios omnipotente. Cuando se dieron cuenta de su ilusión, ya era demasiado tarde…

Y sucedió lo inevitable…

En torno a las 23:30 h de aquella noche sin luna, aparentemente tranquila, los vigías Frederick Fleet y Reginald Lee divisaron desde la atalaya una imagen siniestra: ¡un gigantesco bloque oscuro flotaba a unos 500 metros de distancia de la proa del barco! El monstruoso obstáculo no pudieron verlo antes porque los responsables no disponían de prismáticos…3

Enseguida sonaron tres toques de alarma y el puesto de mando recibió un aviso por teléfono: «¡Iceberg a la vista!». El primer oficial, William McMaster Murdoch, no tuvo tiempo de tomar ninguna medida preventiva; únicamente gritó: «¡Apaguen los motores! ¡Giren todo a babor!».

La orden fue obedecida de inmediato, pero el obstáculo se encontraba demasiado cerca. Lo que parecía imposible se volvió inevitable: el Titanic colisionó de forma violenta contra el hielo y fue perdiendo velocidad poco a poco, hasta detenerse… ¡Estaba mortalmente herido!

El armador del barco, el ingeniero naval Thomas Andrews, acompañado por el capitán Smith, se apresuró a hacer una inspección y confesó al instante que estaba todo perdido. Con tres de sus dieciséis compartimentos estancos dañados, el Titanic podría continuar flotando, y aún lo haría, en caso extremo, hasta con cuatro de ellos totalmente inundados. Sin embargo, el iceberg había chocado con el navío con tanta fuerza y en un ángulo tal que fueron cinco los compartimentos que se vieron afectados de una sola vez.

La gravedad de la situación los llevó a despertar a la tripulación que no estaba de servicio en ese momento: «¡Vamos compañeros, salid! No nos queda ni media hora de vida. Esto nos lo dice el Sr. Andrews. Pero guardáoslo para vosotros, que nadie lo sepa»4.

No hubo, de hecho, ni campanas, ni sirenas, ni ningún tipo de alarma general. La noticia fue comunicada de persona a persona, y se les pedía a todos los pasajeros que se reunieran en la cubierta principal con los chalecos salvavidas puestos.

¿Cómo reaccionaron los pasajeros?

En el interior del barco, el golpe fatal solamente redundó en una leve sacudida. Se cuenta que en la sala de fumadores aún estaban algunos jugando al póker a esas horas. Sintieron un ligero impacto y vieron desfilar por las ventanas una montaña de hielo de más de 20 metros. No obstante, la noche les parecía bella y tranquila. No se tomaron la molestia de salir a ver qué estaba pasando. A fin de cuentas, se encontraban en el Titanic, el gran transatlántico que «ni Dios lo podía hundir»…

Poco a poco la realidad se fue volviendo indiscutible. Mientras la mayor parte de las personas dormía, el mar iba inundando el barco. En escasos minutos dos metros y medio de agua cubrían la sala de máquinas. Y ni siquiera eso consiguió sacudir el optimismo absurdo de buena parte de los pasajeros; muchos aún dudaban si de verdad se estaba hundiendo… Cuando los empleados los despertaban y les ayudaban a ponerse el chaleco salvavidas, algunos sonreían, creyendo que se trataba de una medida exagerada.

Media hora después de la medianoche daban la orden: «Mujeres y niños a los botes salvavidas». Quince minutos después, el primero de ellos descendía al mar. Pero la evacuación fue hecha de forma lenta y desorganizada.

Varios de los marineros no sabían siquiera a cuáles de los botes tenían que ir, porque nunca habían sido entrenados a reaccionar en caso de emergencia… Por falta de pericia de los responsables, solamente cuatro de los veinte botes disponibles fueron llenados a más del 70% de su capacidad.

Además de la incompetencia de la tripulación otro factor concurrió al fracaso de la operación: ¡muchos pasajeros se negaron a entrar en los botes! Se sentían mucho más seguros en el Titanic y no creían en el inminente hundimiento. Muchas mujeres, que deberían haber sido las primeras en evacuar la embarcación, rechazaban hacerlo al juzgar que fuera imposible que el buque llegara a hundirse.

Al principio, no hubo entre los pasajeros ninguna señal de pánico. Uno de los motivos para ello es el hecho de que la propia tripulación del barco les hizo que creyeran que todo se trataba de un mero simulacro… Además, la orquesta seguía tocando melodías alegres, con el fin de mantener la calma.

¿Hasta qué punto persistiría aquella obstinación general que ya superaba todos los límites de lo inimaginable?

¡Finalmente se dieron cuenta!…

Pese a que muchos titubeaban o incluso rehusaban creérselo, el Titanic estaba a punto de consumar su carrera. En breve se encontraría sepultado bajo las aguas.

A las dos de la madrugada, el lento y dramático descenso del titán de los mares a las profundidades del Atlántico se aproximaba del momento final. Únicamente entonces, al toparse de frente con la seriedad de la muerte, se deshicieron las irrisorias ilusiones de los más recalcitrantes y se desmoronó su confianza mundana. Algunos se acordaron de Dios y empezaron a rezar. Otros corrían desorientados por los pasillos y salones de la embarcación, presos de la desesperación.

A los 2:17 h todas las luces del buque se habían apagado. En medio de la oscuridad nada más que se percibía gente lanzándose desde todas partes al mar helado como último intento de salvarse.

A las 2:20 h del 15 de abril, las aguas del océano se cerraban para siempre sobre el orgulloso navío y, con él, se hundía el estúpido optimismo de toda una generación. El naufragio del Titanic ponía de relieve, en cierto sentido, el fraude de ese way of life5 ateo y hedonista.

El mundo de hoy: un «nuevo Titanic»

Tan sólo 660 personas de las más de 2000 que habían embarcado en Southampton sobrevivieron al naufragio. Pero ¡ay!, ¡cuántas oportunidades hubo de evitar o minimizar tan enorme catástrofe!

Si los comandantes les hubieran dado verdadera importancia a los mensajes recibidos el domingo alertándoles sobre los icebergs… Si la presencia de prismáticos en el equipo de los vigías les hubiera permitido avistar un minuto antes aquel enorme bloque de hielo… Si la tripulación hubiera sido entrenada para actuar correctamente en aquella emergencia… Si los pasajeros hubieran creído en el peligro inminente… ¡Cuántas de esas 1500 vidas perdidas no se podrían haber salvado!

Ahora bien, ¿quién sabe si, a semejanza de lo ocurrido milenios antes en la Torre de Babel, Dios no habría permitido que, en el hundimiento del Titanic, el hombre fuera víctima de su propio orgullo? ¿No habrá consentido Él en ese fracaso como un merecido castigo a la arrogancia humana de principios de siglo, que osaba desafiar al Creador con sus conocimientos científicos?

Analogías no faltan tampoco entre los días de hoy y el naufragio del poderoso buque. Ante la decadencia moral, social e intelectual en que vivimos inmersos, antes las cada vez más frecuentes catástrofes naturales sean o no causadas por el ser humano, ante las pandemias y misteriosas enfermedades que amenazan al mundo entero, el hombre hodierno insiste en quedarse mirando hacia sí mismo.

Y «ese optimismo a toda prueba, que no se altera ante las más evidentes manifestaciones de que las cosas van mal, indica una insensibilidad ante los planos de la Providencia y, en último análisis, un divorcio entre los hombres y Dios»6.

La humanidad ya ha recibido numerosas advertencias con respecto al peligro que la amenaza. La principal de ellas fue dada por la propia Virgen Santísima en Fátima, pocos años después del episodio histórico que acabamos de recordar. ¿Habrá sido Ella escuchada por los que se dicen hijos suyos? ¿O los hombres creen, como tantas veces ha ocurrido a lo largo de la Historia, que la «poderosa embarcación» del mundo es «insumergible» como supuestamente lo era el Titanic?

Lo cierto es que, desde la expulsión de nuestros primeros padres del paraíso terrenal, Dios juró que la estirpe de la Virgen vencería a la de la serpiente. Y por eso Nuestra Señora prometió: «¡Por fin mi Inmaculado Corazón triunfará!».

No nos preocupemos, por tanto, con la solidez de nuestro navío, ni con la violencia de las olas que lo sacuden en medio de la victoria, ni con los icebergs traicioneros. Sean cuales fueren las dificultades que encontremos a lo largo del camino, la promesa de María Santísima nos garantiza el éxito de la travesía.
