Infancia.
San Juan Bautista María Vianney, una de las más prodigiosas glorias del clero de Francia, nació en Dardilly, cerca de Lyon, el día 8 de mayo de 1786 y fue bautizado el mismo día.
Hijo del agricultor Mateo Vianney y de María Belusa, tuvo cinco hermanos, todos consagrados solemnemente a Nuestra Señora antes del nacimiento. Eran Catalina, Juana María, que desapareció a los cinco años, Francisco, Margarita y otro Francisco, que apodaban “el benjamín”.
Hijo de padres cristianos, Juan María fue desde niño piadoso, dulce y bueno. La madre, un día, le dio una imagen de Nuestra Señora, y el niño predestinado jamás la soltaba.
La llevaba tierna y respetuosamente en los brazos adonde fuera, así pensaba él y acostumbraba a rezar delante de ella, demorada y compenetradamente, ya como un pequeño sacerdote.
Pronto comenzó a enseñar a sus compañeros las lecciones de religión que aprendía de sus padres, a veces inclusive a adultos, muy serio, muy seguro de sí mismo, siempre inspirado.
Revolución francesa.
Con la invasión de la revolución a las provincias vivió días tristes: las iglesias cerradas, tristemente cerradas al pueblo lo entristecían, y los sacerdotes, perseguidos, aquellos padres heroicos sin miedo, que por la verdad, decían misas clandestinas en lo más espeso de los bosques, dando Jesús a los hombres, le llenaban su alma de admiración y de un cierto desasosiego, de una avidez incontenible para las cosas de Dios.
En efecto, desde aquellos momentos agitados, de grandes desórdenes, de muerte, de miedo y de hambre, nació el rumbo que se propuso alcanzar: con su carácter ya templado, tuvo un celo apasionado dirigido a la salvación de las almas.
De extraña predilección por los pobres, por los abandonados que nada poseen, ni comida ni cariño, los reunía por los caminos, por los bosques, a lo largo de los setos, y, alegremente, los llevaba a su casa, donde sus padres, afamados desde hacía mucho por la caridad, acogían a todos los desventurados con una gran sonrisa que ahuyentaba poquedades.
A los trece años, con un fervor fuera de lo común, Juan María, resplandeciente, hizo su primera comunión. Y el buen niño, con Jesús en el corazón, un corazón inmenso, decía para sí mismo, como si fuera la más dulce de las melodías:
¡Yo seré sacerdote! ¡Yo seré sacerdote! … ¡Y lo fue!
