De manera análoga, todo lo que la Santa Iglesia ha engendrado a lo largo de los siglos posee siempre una aplicación para el presente, la cual les cabe a los católicos manifestarla.

En este sentido, el Rosario es extremadamente actual y no parece difícil demostrarlo. No obstante, para darle el debido valor a las «cosas nuevas» de dicho tesoro, será necesario contemplar antes los quilates de algunas joyas de venerable antigüedad que lo componen.

Grosso modo, las formas de oración se dividen en dos bloques: la vocal y la mental. Si empleamos una analogía con el ser humano, diríamos que la primera está para la segunda más o menos como el cuerpo lo está para el alma. En la oración vocal, las palabras que utilizamos para dirigirnos a Dios —sean sacadas de un misal o de un breviario, en el caso de una oración oficial, o incluso de un libro, una estampa o cualquier otra fuente— componen el elemento «material» de la plegaria, con el cual se estimula la oración mental. Esta última, por su parte, es propiamente la elevación de la mente a Dios, es decir, se produce cuando el hombre emplea su inteligencia y su corazón para contemplar y amar las realidades celestiales, con el auxilio de la gracia.

Ahora bien, entre las oraciones vocales, ¿cuál habrá más excelsa que el padrenuestro, compuesto por el propio Hombre Dios (cf. Mt 6, 9-13), la salutación angélica (cf. Lc 1, 28.42) y el gloria al Padre, en honor a la Santísima Trinidad? Y en el campo de la oración mental, ¿qué tema más sublime hallaremos para meditar que no sean los misterios de la Vida, Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, contemplados a lo largo del Rosario?

Por lo tanto, conforme resume el renombrado teólogo fray Antonio Royo Marín, OP, esta oración «encierra las ventajas de la oración mental y de la vocal en el grado objetivamente más perfecto posible».
