Se engañaría el que pensara que el vocablo ángel define la naturaleza de esos seres espirituales. Si nos remontamos a la etimología de la palabra, primero encontraremos el nombre latino angelus, que a su vez proviene del vocablo hebreo מַלְאָך que los Setenta tradujeron como ἄγγελος.
Tanto el término hebreo como el griego significan mensajero o enviado. Por eso, dice San Agustín:
«En realidad ‘ángel’ es el nombre de un oficio, no de una naturaleza. Si preguntas por el nombre de su naturaleza, es espíritu; y si preguntas por su oficio, es ángel». 1
Luego, ¿quiere decir que los ángeles no tienen cuerpo? Exactamente, el ángel no tiene materia, es puro espíritu.
Esto que para nosotros hoy nos parece tan natural antaño constituyó una grave cuestión teológica, en razón de la cual Santo Tomás de Aquino estuvo a punto de ser excomulgado por el obispo de París. 2 No obstante, resolvió el problema y se mereció, de esta manera, el título de Doctor Angélico.
No vamos a tratar aquí toda la teoría metafísica y filosófica que envolvió la cuestión, sino que expondremos sólo de modo resumido lo necesario para entender la naturaleza espiritual de los ángeles.
Hasta Santo Tomás de Aquino, los teólogos se hallaban en un aparente callejón sin salida. Por un lado, la existencia de los ángeles estaba demostrada en la Sagrada Escritura, y no se podía negar. Por otro, pensaban que la materia era el único elemento capaz de delimitar a un ser. Así que los ángeles no podían ser inmateriales, porque serían infinitos. Creían, pues, que los ángeles tenían cierta materia muy sutil y que, comparada con la materia del cuerpo humano, era espiritualizada.3
Entonces, ¿cómo sustentar y explicar la inmaterialidad de los ángeles? Santo Tomás lo solucionó de una forma sencilla y precisa. Los ángeles son puros espíritus, como Dios. Pero hay dos prerrogativas que permanecen reservadas al Creador: es infinito y eterno. De hecho, la inteligencia angélica es limitada, y su voluntad no es capaz de un acto de valor infinito. En cambio, el acto de la inteligencia divina y de su voluntad es infinito. El Padre conociéndose a sí mismo engendra al Hijo y del amor entre los dos procede el Espíritu Santo.
Además, los ángeles tienen un comienzo, fueron creados en un momento determinado. Dios es eterno, sin principio, ni origen en otro ser. Conclusión: por mucho que el ángel no tenga una materia que delimite su espíritu, no es eterno ni ilimitado como Dios. Ésa es la mayor diferencia entre el Creador y cualquier criatura.
Otras grandes figuras de la patrística ya habían defendido la inmaterialidad de los ángeles.4 Pero ninguno solventó el enigma metafísico como Santo Tomás.
El Aquinate va más lejos en su explicitación y afirma que no sólo es posible, sino que «es necesario admitir la existencia de algunas criaturas incorpóreas»,5 en el magnífico mosaico de la Creación.
